I’m not going to talk about how I made $11,000 writing in a month. I’m not going to reveal the secret sauce to $100,000 a year in passive income. I’m not going to brag about what I’ve achieved. All I want to do is present a few facts and thoughts about my experience writing on Medium for two months.

I’ll start by explaining the nature of my blog. I mainly use this blog as a place to share my thoughts about various photography techniques and gear. I love explaining an editing technique in the hopes that it will help people expand their skill set. Some of my editing tutorials would probably be best served on a platform like YouTube, but I’m too nervous to sit in front of a camera and upload for everyone to see. Over the past two months, I’ve written what I wanted to write about and I’ve done it on the schedule I wanted. I’ve never once advertised my content or tried to create some gimmicky click bait type content. This is my blog, my way, and the organic growth (or not growth) that resulted from two months of consistent posting.

Here are a few basic pieces of information. Over the two months I usually posted one or two times a week, for a total of 12 published articles. I started out by posting on Wednesdays, but had more content that I expected and switched to posting on Tuesdays and Fridays. The 12 published articles have received a total of 1,684 views, 775 reads, and 32 fans. This is an overall read rate of 46%. From the Medium Partner Program this has resulted in earnings of $16.72. It’s not much, but it’ll pay for my Netflix subscription. Not bad if you look at it like that.

The majority of activity with my blog has occurred in the last 30 days. In the last 30 days I have published 8 of the 12 articles. These 8 articles have accumulated 1,351 views, 607 reads, and 24 fans.

When you look at the graph you can see a fairly significant spike in the past week. This a result of the reaction to one of my most recent posts, discussing the Orton Effect editing technique. The article has received 916 views, 361 reads, and 11 fans. It was featured in topics by Medium, as well as published in the UX Collective. These 916 views have translated into $6.59 in total revenue.

Over the course of the 12 stories, 4 of them have been featured in topics by Medium (2 are still awaiting review). 4 stories have also been published by various publishers. 3 of the 4 featured stories were published. The non featured stories make up 56 total views. Also of note is the follower count. I have accumulated 22 followers in the last 2 months and have not followed anyone. That’s really every number I have about my blog in the last two months.

In terms of advice? It’s difficult and frustrating. There have been a lot of articles that I have posted that only received a handful of views and really no recognition. But it’s fun and I’m proud of it. It’s a great creative outlet for me and it feels great when you have a successful article. It’s nice to have people recognize what you’ve done.

This is definitely different from my usual, but hopefully you found it somewhat interesting. Talk to you all next week!
